Dr Riches has many years of experience working as a researcher and clinical academic. He has particular research expertise in digital mental health, virtual reality and immersive technologies, positive psychology, cognitive behaviour therapies, and arts and creativity. He has published numerous academic articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Riches has extensive experience of implementation and research on virtual reality therapies and interventions, including for psychological wellbeing, reduction of stress and mental health symptoms, to promote relaxation, and for staff training. His research includes the application of virtual reality for the general population, within workplace settings, and for patients and staff in healthcare settings.

Dr Riches carries out research on digital mental health. In particular, his interests lie in social media, online participant recruitment, video call-based psychological interventions, online workspaces, use of artificial intelligence and robotics in psychological therapies, and virtual reality technologies and the Metaverse.

Dr Riches’ research experience often explores the psychological benefits of arts and creativity and the use of art to increase awareness and reduce stigma about mental health. He has a particular interest in art installations that use immersive technologies.

Dr Riches has strong research interests in evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapies. In particular, the way thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact to maintain mental health conditions. He has specialised in third-wave cognitive behavioural approaches, such as positive psychology, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, mindfulness, and the comprehend, cope and connect approach.

Dr Riches has research interests in positive psychology, such as the study of character strengths, positive experiences, and developing a higher quality of life through meaningful actions. He is interested in its tharaputic and coaching applications for both clinical and non-clinical populations.
